But they stayed there, untouched.
I’d think, plan, and picture what could happen if I just acted on one of them. Then I’d hesitate.
I’d tell myself I wasn’t ready, or that I needed to learn one more thing first.

Looking back, I wasn’t short on ideas.
I was short on belief.

I didn’t yet understand that belief doesn’t come before action. It’s born from it.
You don’t get confidence and then move. You move, and confidence finds you.

Napoleon Hill once said, “Action is the real measure of intelligence.”
For a long time, I thought he meant something lofty, that wise people know how to act with perfect timing.
But what he really meant was simple: the smartest thing you can do is start.

There’s a story about a psychiatrist named Srini Pillay who ended up teaching at Harvard.
He didn’t have connections or a secret door.
He just decided he wanted to be there, and the next thing he did was call them.
Literally.
He picked up the phone, asked for the head of psychiatry, sent his résumé, and two weeks later, he was in.

He wasn’t more qualified than everyone else. He just acted while the thought was still alive.
That single step changed everything.

Our brains don’t move until we give them a reason to.
They’re built to conserve energy, to wait until we believe something is worth the effort.
That’s why belief is powerful, but it’s also tricky.
When we believe we can, the brain lights up and begins searching for a way.
When we don’t, it shuts down before the first spark.

Imagine I ask you to picture raising your hand an inch off a table.
Your brain’s motor system fires like it’s actually happening.
It believes.
But if I ask you to flap your arms and fly to the moon, the system stays silent.
It knows that’s not real.

That’s how it works with our goals too.
We say, I could start something new, then whisper, but it’ll probably fail.
That whisper is enough to kill the current.

Your brain listens to belief, not hope.

Athletes understand this better than most.
They don’t just imagine victory. They imagine the struggle, the pain, the missed shot, the moment they almost give up, and then the part where they keep going.
That’s how they wire themselves for action.

When belief feels too heavy, start from the outside.
Picture yourself succeeding like you’re watching a movie.
Then, once that image feels familiar, step inside it.
See through your own eyes.
That’s how belief grows. From distant possibility to lived reality.

Procrastination and perfectionism are just fear with good manners.
We disguise hesitation as preparation.
We polish plans because polishing feels safer than doing.

But no one builds a life out of polishing.

The people who create change. The ones who turn ideas into something real, are rarely perfect.
They’re just quick to recover.
They miss, adjust, and move again.

That’s the real secret.
Belief builds with motion.
Clarity grows with movement.
And sometimes, the only thing standing between who you are and who you could be is one simple, ordinary act:

The step that changes everything.

Subscribe now

I don’t have this mastered. I still hesitate, still stall, still overthink. But each time I move anyway, something opens up that wasn’t there before. What’s the most important part of a tree? The trunk that holds it upright? The branches that stretch out into the sky? The leaves that catch the sun? The roots that drink from the soil? The bark that shields it?

The truth is you can’t separate them. Each part does its work, and only together does a tree remain alive. If one is missing, the whole system falters.

Carry that thought further: what’s the most important tree in the forest? Which species deserves the crown? Humans make lists like that. Some wood is good for paper, some for furniture, some for building homes. But trees themselves don’t keep score. They simply germinate where they’re planted and become what they’re meant to be.

The forest thrives not because one tree dominates but because all of them participate and cooperate. Roots intertwine. Shade protects seedlings. Leaves drop and feed the soil. Birds, insects, fungi, and animals turn trees into shelter, food, and home. No single one survives without the others.

If humans were trees, though, we wouldn’t rest until we’d divided the forest into winners and losers. We’d declare which trees deserve sunlight and which don’t. We’d ration out who gets water and who goes thirsty. Birds would be yelling at squirrels for sitting on the wrong branch. Ants would invent weapons to wipe out caterpillars, just to prove their superiority. The whole place would descend into chaos. Exactly what we see when we look at human society.

And that’s the part that unsettles me. Trees don’t argue about value. They just live it. Humans, on the other hand, turned judgment into a full-time occupation. We decided somewhere along the line to crown ourselves as the “best species,” the pinnacle of the planet. Yet if you take even a moment to watch how a forest works, it’s hard not to wonder.

Am I really smarter than a tree?

The longer I sit with that question, the more I suspect the answer is no. Because a tree does not destroy the soil it depends on. A tree does not poison its own water. A tree does not invent weapons to scorch the forest. It does not trade shade for power, or roots for profit. It does not measure its worth by how many branches it controls or how many leaves it hoards.

A tree knows something we don’t: that survival is not a competition. That strength is found in connection, not dominance. That life thrives only when everything around it thrives too.

We call ourselves the most intelligent species, yet we act in ways no tree would ever consider. We carve up the earth, choke the air, drain the rivers, and call it progress. We invent hierarchies to decide who gets light and who is left in the shadows. And in the process, we forget that the whole system either lives together—or collapses together.

So no. I am not smarter than a tree. I am part of a species clever enough to split atoms but not wise enough to sit quietly in the forest and listen.

If there’s a reckoning after this, I’ll answer it with one truth: I was embarrassed to be human. Because a tree does not destroy the soil it depends on. A tree does not poison its own water. A tree does not invent weapons to scorch the forest. It does not trade shade for power, or roots for profit. It does not measure its worth by how many branches it controls or how many leaves it hoards.

And if we want to make any difference at all, then we need to act less like rulers of the forest and more like members of it. Stop taking more than we give. Stop measuring worth by control. Start building roots that hold others up, not cut them off.

That’s the work in front of us. Not to prove we’re smarter than trees, but to prove we can finally learn from them.

If you want to start somewhere, make it small: sit under a tree and listen. Notice how it gives without asking, how it stands without boasting or judging, how it belongs without demanding. Then ask yourself where you might do the same.
<p class="button-wrapper" data-attrs="{"url":"https://thequietwitness.substack.com/subscribe?","text":"Subscribe That silence wasn’t just busyness. It was hesitation.

I kept asking myself questions I couldn’t answer:

Do I really have anything worth saying?

Does my voice matter in a world already overflowing with noise?

What if I get it wrong, or it falls flat?

The longer I wrestled with those questions, the quieter I became. I convinced myself that waiting until I had something profound would be better than showing up unsure.

But here’s the truth I’ve had to face: waiting for perfect only guarantees silence. And silence, for me, slowly turns into self-doubt.

I think part of my struggle is the difference between what I know how to do and what I’m learning to do. When I drove a semi, mastery was a matter of repetition. The rules and outcomes were clear. But with writing, with trying to share thoughts that matter, there are no guide rails. No dispatcher handing me a load. I have to choose the route myself, and that uncertainty can feel paralyzing.

And yet, these weeks of quiet reminded me of something important: I need to write. Not because I’m an expert, but because writing is how I find my way forward. It’s how I fight through the fog of indecision. It’s how I turn all the scattered learning of my life into something that might help someone else.

So here I am, starting again. Not because I figured it all out, but because I finally accepted I never will.

If you’ve been stuck in your own silence, whether it’s writing, creating, or even just speaking up. I hope this nudges you too. Don’t wait for perfect. Begin again, feel the fear and do it anyway.

Reflection for you: Where has silence held you back, and what would it look like to take even a small step forward today?

Subscribe now

Until next time,
It feels good to be posting again.

-Gary

(The Quiet Witness)

When the Truth Breaks You, and Builds You

Life breaks you open. toe or a bad day. It’s the kind that shows up when the ground beneath your feet gives out. When something you believed to be solid, real, true... turns out to be a lie. Or worse, a betrayal.

Not just a fact being wrong.
But your whole life story collapsing in on itself.

I’ve experienced that. And maybe, you have too. You know exactly what I mean.

The Fall

Maybe it was a friendship that wasn’t what it seemed.
Someone you trusted with your whole heart who walked away without explanation.
A business partner who left you holding the bag.
Maybe it was discovering the person you loved had a secret life.
A promise broken so cleanly it made you question every other one you’d ever heard.
A partner’s betrayal that forced you to rewrite your entire past just to make sense of it.

And then—one day—it cracks.
And then shatters.
And you’re left standing there holding the pieces, wondering what was ever real to begin with.

That’s not just disillusionment.
That’s identity trauma.

And when you’re someone who values loyalty, who prides yourself on telling the truth, showing up, doing the right thing, even when it’s hard, then betrayal hits harder. It doesn’t just feel like someone lied to you. It feels like you failed for believing them. For being blind. For being human.

The Labrador Heart

I’ve always seen myself as a Labrador. Loyal, committed, faithful to a fault.
But when loyalty meets betrayal, it breaks something primal.
It doesn’t just make you angry, it makes you question who “you” even are.

And let me say this as plainly as I can:
Believing in someone who turned out to be unworthy does not make you weak.
It means you were living by your values.
It means you were honest in a dishonest world.

That’s not something to be ashamed of.
That’s something to rebuild from.

Watching Others Burn

Lately, I’ve been watching someone else go through this kind of collapse. They recently discovered their partner had been unfaithful. Repeatedly. And suddenly, their entire life, the life they thought they knew, is in question.

They are angry, bitter, and lost. Trying to understand, but painfully unsuccessful.
And watching them is like staring into a fire others once walked through.
It’s painful. It’s sad and makes me uncomfortable to watch. I want to help, but somethings are meant to walk through alone. As painful as it is!

But I know what they don’t—yet.
That survival is possible. That acceptance is possible.
That eventually, you stop trying to make sense of what happened and start building from the new truth.

You don’t carry someone else to that place. You just stand near the edge and let them see it’s real.

The Sculptor Called Time

They say experience is the best teacher. And they’re right.
I’ve done things in my younger years that make me cringe now.
Immature, careless, selfish things.
Because when you're young, you're blind to consequence. You think life is happening to you, not through you.

But over time, experience chips away at your rough edges.
Loss. Regret. Responsibility.
Mistakes you can’t take back.
People you can’t unhurt.
People you can’t get back.

You live long enough, and you don’t just age, you transform.
You become something that wasn’t possible without the breaking.

You become a kind of masterpiece.
Not perfect. Not pretty. But honest.
Sculpted by fire, failure, and forgiveness.

Life Is Experience. Nothing Else.

We spend so much time trying to understand life.
Trying to get it right. Avoid pain. Make good choices.

But life isn’t theory.
It isn’t what you plan.
It isn’t even what you believe.

Life is what happens to you. And what you do with it.
That’s it.

You don’t get to skip the fall. You don’t get to rewind the tape.
But if you’re lucky, and honest, you get to reflect.
To see clearly the difference between who you were and who you are now.
To carry that clarity forward, even if it came too late to change the past.

Wayne Dyer once said you have a choice:
You can either use what happened in the past as a club or as a school.
Use the club to beat yourself up.
Or use it as a school to learn from.

That distinction is everything.

Because what happened already happened. The only real power you have now is what meaning you give it. What you carry forward. What kind of person you become because of it, not in spite of it.

Maybe that’s the point.

Maybe the meaning isn’t in avoiding the fall. Maybe it’s in surviving it, learning from it, and letting it carve away the false parts so what’s left is something closer to the truth.

Not a perfect life.
But a lived one.

The Invitation

If you’re in the collapse right now. If something you believed has turned out to be false, and it feels like your whole world is unraveling, know this:

You're not crazy.
You're not weak.
You're not broken beyond repair.

You're being carved. Shaped. Refined.
You’re becoming someone who sees clearly.
Who speaks truth.
Who helps others not by saving them, but by surviving in front of them.

You don’t need to rush it.
You don’t need to “be okay.”
You just need to stay honest and keep walking.

That’s the path.
That’s the lesson.
That’s life.

And you’re not alone.

Closing

There’s no formula for how to move forward after the truth falls apart.
But there is a path. And it usually begins in silence. In honesty. In the decision to stop pretending and start listening, to your own voice, your own experience, your own truth.

You don’t have to explain it to anyone.
You don’t have to make it look pretty.
You just have to keep walking.

And with enough time and enough grace, the ground steadies again.
Not because it goes back to how it was, but because you do.

Not the same version. A wiser one. A clearer one.
And maybe even, in time, a better one.
<p class="button-wrapper" My days blurred together, figuring out systems I’ve never touched before, learning by trial and error, constantly wondering if I was doing it right. At the same time, life outside the screen didn’t slow down. Personal things popped up. Attention got scattered. The quiet got drowned out.

I didn’t mean to go silent here. I just got pulled into the noise.

And I’m realizing that’s the irony.

The quiet doesn’t scream for attention. It waits.

It’s not that I’ve had nothing to say. I just haven’t slowed down enough to hear it. The still voice doesn’t compete with the noise, it just disappears underneath it.

So this isn’t some polished thought or profound essay. It’s just a check-in. A reminder to myself (and maybe to you) that the quiet doesn’t leave us. We just have to remember to listen for it.

And I’m listening again.

Not perfectly. Not consistently. But I’m starting to feel the space between the noise again. The subtle moments when something deeper nudges me to pause. To notice. To pay attention to what’s beneath the surface instead of just reacting to everything above it.

Listening again means I stop trying to force clarity and start making room for it to arrive. That I honor stillness as something productive. That I remember I don’t have to be useful to be worth something.

That’s where The Quiet Witness comes from.
Not the noise of the world, but the voice that survives underneath it.

Thanks for being here, it means more than you know!

— Gary

P.S. If you’re curious what’s been pulling my focus lately, I’ve been building LandlordAnswers.ai A tool to help landlords get clear, fast answers to their most pressing legal questions. Recognizable. Accountant. Doctor. Divorce attorney. Anything that signals to the world, and to myself, this is who I am and this is what I do.

You wouldn’t have to keep figuring it out. You could just focus on the one thing. Refine it. Master it. Be done.

But when you’re a generalist, when your brain sees connections in a thousand directions, it’s different. You’re not on one path. You’re in the woods, holding a compass, trying to make sense of it all. And most days, there’s no applause for that. Just more trees.

People love specialists. The world pays for simplicity. It’s easier to trust someone with a label. Even if that label barely scratches the surface of who they really are.

But here’s what I’ve learned, slowly and sometimes painfully:

Having many skills doesn’t mean you’re scattered. It means you’re equipped.
The hard part is choosing where to aim.

There’s nothing wrong with wanting clarity. Just don’t confuse a title with a purpose. A job description is a shortcut. A mission takes longer, but it’s worth more.

Maybe you weren’t built to wear one name tag. Maybe you were built to build something that needs all of you.

That’s what I’m pondering today.

— Gary

Subscribe now

P.S. his talks about self-image and personal growth.
Or maybe it was Dan Kennedy, who called it required reading and even released his own version for entrepreneurs.

Either way, I heard the title enough times from people I respected that eventually, I picked it up.

Not because I thought I had low self-esteem.
Because I finally learned to take advice from people smarter than me and act on it.

I was doing all the “right” things.
Working hard. Showing up. Trying to be better.
But no matter how much I changed on the outside, something inside kept pulling me back.

Like I was stuck playing a role I didn’t choose but couldn’t stop performing.

Then I read this book.

Not a motivational pep talk. Not a self-help cliché.
Just a clear, clinical perspective from a plastic surgeon named Maxwell Maltz who stumbled onto something big:

It’s not what you look like that changes your life.
It’s the image you carry of yourself inside your mind.

Here’s the gist of the book:

Your brain is a machine.
It doesn’t think. It doesn’t judge. It doesn’t question.
It simply obeys the image it’s been given.

Maltz noticed that when he performed surgery on someone who felt ugly or broken, sometimes they’d instantly transform, confident, alive, free.
Other times, nothing changed.
Same face, same scars, still stuck in the same internal story.

He realized the brain functions like a goal-seeking device. Like a missile. It hones in on whatever internal blueprint you feed it.

So if your self-image says:

“I always mess things up”

“I’m not meant for success”

“I’ll never be good enough”

Then your mind and body will steer your behavior subconsciously, automatically, to match that belief.

It doesn’t matter if it’s true.
It only matters that you believe it.

Subscribe now

The powerful part? The image can be changed.

Your self-image isn’t fixed. It’s just a mental habit.
And like any habit, it can be replaced with intention, imagination, and repetition.

Your nervous system can’t tell the difference between a real experience and a vividly imagined one.
So if you feed it new mental pictures, emotional rehearsals, and small real-world wins… the system starts rewiring.

That’s not “positive thinking.”
That’s basic human wiring.

The mind accepts the images you give it. So give it better ones.

What it did for me:

This book didn’t just make me think differently.
It made me see differently. Myself. My limits. My patterns.

It taught me I wasn’t broken. I was just running old code written by teachers, past failures, shame, and outdated roles.

And for the first time, I realized I could update the system.
Not through willpower. But through awareness.
Through repetition.
Through speaking to myself differently.

So here’s why I’m telling you this:

If you’ve been trying to force change but keep getting pulled back.
If you feel stuck repeating patterns you thought you’d grown out of.
If you’re tired of obeying a voice in your head that sounds more like criticism than truth.

Then maybe it’s not you.
Maybe it’s the image you’re still living from.
An old blueprint. A bad map. A worn-out script.

You’re not broken.
You’re just running old code.
And the good news is: you can rewrite it.

Read this book.
Not because you need fixing.
Because you deserve to know what’s possible when you stop living like a problem.

Your brain is still listening.
Might as well give it a better story.

Your brain isn’t out to get you.
It’s just been trained by old input. Old beliefs. Old voices.
But if you’re still breathing, you’re still rewritable.

If this post resonated with you, even a little, I’d love to know.

Drop a comment, share it with someone who needs it, or just reply and tell me where you are in your own mental rewiring. y2="14"></line>

One of the first things we’re taught as kids is not to talk back.

Talk back to your parents? Get punished.
Talk back to a teacher? Get labeled.
Talk back to a coach, a pastor, a boss? Step out of line.

So we learned early: obedience equals safety.
Silence equals respect.
Compliance equals love.

But here’s what nobody told us:

If you never learn to talk back,
you’ll spend your whole life obeying a voice that isn’t even yours.

The Book That Changed My Internal Dialogue

One of the first books that grabbed me wasn’t flashy. It was What to Say When You Talk to Yourself by Shad Helmstetter.

Just the title alone hit like a jolt.

I didn’t even know we could talk to ourselves on purpose. I thought the voice in my head was just part of me. Something I had to live with.

But Helmstetter made one thing painfully clear:

You’re always talking to yourself.
And every word is either reinforcing a future you want...
or burying you deeper in the one you don’t.

Everyone has an inner voice.
It comments. Judges. Reminds. Scolds. Narrates.
It’s a constant stream, filtered through years of programming, beliefs, fears, wounds, and half-truths we never stopped to question.

Most people never interrupt it. They move through life on auto-response.
Thought → emotion → reaction → consequence.
Repeat.

They think they’re thinking.
They’re just running scripts, written by someone else.

Subscribe now

Here’s What Changed Everything for Me

Helmstetter didn’t just say “you have an inner voice.” He showed me I could interrupt it.

I remember walking into a meeting one day, and without even realizing it, I heard myself say:

“Don’t screw this up.”

That thought wasn’t helpful. It wasn’t kind. It wasn’t even true.

It was just... there.
Familiar. Automatic. Quietly toxic.

But this time, I stopped.
I paused.
And I mentally grabbed that sentence like I was holding it in my hand.

“Don’t screw this up.”

Where did that come from?
Who taught me to talk to myself like that?
And why was I still listening?

I swapped it out for something better:

“You’ve handled worse. Just be present.”

I didn’t feel amazing. I didn’t suddenly become fearless.
But I interrupted the voice.
And that was enough.

Try This With Me

Let’s make this real.

In your mind, say the word “impossible.”
Not out loud. Just silently, in your head.

Done?

Now pause.

You said something…
But your mouth didn’t move.
You heard it…
But your ears didn’t hear anything.
You saw it…
But you didn’t use your eyes.

So… who said it?

Who heard it?

If you’re not the voice...
And you’re not the thought...
Then what are you?

That question isn’t there to confuse you.
It’s there to wake you up.

Because the one who noticed the thought, the one who paused long enough to ask, that’s you. That’s the part no one teaches us to develop.

But it’s the only part with real power.

The Pause Is the Superpower

You don’t need to think perfectly.
You don’t need to silence your mind.
You don’t need affirmations taped to your mirror.

You just need to notice the next sentence that rolls through your head.

Pause.

Ask:

Is this mine?

Is this true?

Is this helpful?

Then choose what to do with it.

That’s the work.
That’s the difference between reacting and responding.
Between being run by your mind and running your own damn life.

Closing

I’ve read a lot of books since then. Some deeper. Some louder. Some more complex.

But What to Say When You Talk to Yourself was the first time I realized that not every voice inside me was for me.

Some thoughts are echoes.
Some are old warnings that overstayed their welcome.
Some are lies I practiced so long they became familiar.

You don’t have to shut them up.
You just have to stop bowing to them.

It’s okay to break the rule.
Talk back.
Especially when the voice in charge sounds like it forgot who you really are.

So much of what we struggle with starts in silence.
Not the peaceful kind, the kind that comes from obeying voices we never stopped to question.
But the moment you pause, notice, and speak back?
That’s when the story starts to shift.

Not because the noise disappears.
But because you finally know who’s really listening.

I don’t write these things to teach or preach.
I write them because I need the reminders too.
Because the voice in my head still talks back sometimes.
But now, I talk back louder.

If this hit you…
If you’ve spent years obeying voices that weren’t yours…
If you're tired of being run by thoughts that never asked for permission…
And you’re ready to walk this path with someone who’s done the work and still doing it.

Become a paid subscriber.
Not because you owe me.
Because you owe you something better.

This is what I write.
This is where I write it.
This is the work.
Let’s do it together.

Stay aware, stay kind,
—Gary
The Quiet Witness
<p class="button-wrapper" Most people want the benefits, engagement, feedback, connection, but they aren't willing to start small and stay consistent long enough for it to grow.

I get it. I’ve had my own doubts about not being “the guy in front of the room,” the expert with all the answers. But here's the truth: you don’t have to be. In fact, waiting for that "expert" status often means you never even start.

I’m learning that communities form around realness, not perfection.

Right now, I have 25 subscribers. Not thousands, not millions. Just 25 real people who’ve said, “Yeah, I want to hear what you’re thinking.” And I didn’t buy them; they found me. That’s a real start. And it's a powerful one because it proves that showing up imperfectly, sharing what’s real, and testing ideas in public is what truly connects.

Subscribe now

The Fracture and the Quilt

This journey of building a community, even a small one, has cracked open new thoughts for me, especially when I reflect on the bigger picture of how our world has fractured.

My wife and I recently spent hours in the car talking about how families and communities have split wide open in the past four years. We talked about the distant relatives, the lingering regrets, and the memories of laughter that now feel out of reach. This wasn't just about one argument; it was centuries of tribal identities, religious dogma, and culture wars, all stitched together. The pandemic simply ripped the seams. One virus, one vaccine, and suddenly, the gap felt unbridgeable.

I’ve always been the one in the room who’s kind, friendly, and willing to listen. I'm not the loudest, not the one arguing. But lately, those abilities have been wearing thin. It's exhausting to constantly be treated like a project to be fixed, like you're the “odd one out” who needs to be prayed for or persuaded. Real conversation is a two-way street, not an interrogation.

I see now that we often live in echo chambers, surrounded by those who mirror our beliefs. When we step out, it’s not just individuals meeting; it’s entire worldviews clashing. Most people aren’t interested in bridging the gap; they're more interested in defending what they already believe.

And yet, I hold onto this truth: most humans, at their core, don’t want to harm each other. Most of us still want to feel safe, seen, and understood.

Stitching It Together

This post isn’t about having answers or offering a fix-it plan. It's more like a quilt, bits and pieces of what I’ve seen, felt, and what I’m trying to figure out. The patterns aren’t neat, the stitches are messy, but it’s real. It’s a real-time example of what most people say they want to do but never follow through on.

Community is built on honesty, shared values, and momentum, not expertise or fancy graphics. It’s about offering a space for the questions to exist, not just the answers.

Finding a Way Forward: Friendly Adversaries?

So, what do we do when the divide feels so vast, even within our own families and closest circles? Sometimes, the honest answer is, we don't have a perfect solution. But maybe, just maybe, there are ways to relate, not as those who must agree, but as "friendly adversaries."

This means:

Letting Go of "Winning": The goal isn't to convince them or change their mind. It's to see the human behind the armor, even if that armor is thick with beliefs you find irreconcilable.

Asking, Not Telling: Instead of stating your case, ask genuine questions. Listen without the intention to refute, but to understand. This doesn't mean you agree, but it creates a space for connection.

Defining Your Boundaries: It's okay to step back when the conversation becomes one-sided or disrespectful. Protecting your energy doesn't make you cold; it makes you human. You don't have infinite patience, and that's okay.

Focusing on Shared Humanity (Even if it's the only thing left): What common ground can you find? A shared love for a sports team? A mutual appreciation for a hobby? Sometimes, the only common ground is the shared experience of navigating this messy life.

Being the One Who Goes First in Admitting the Messy Stuff: Your willingness to be vulnerable about your own struggles with these divisions can be a powerful invitation for others to do the same.

The real question is whether they want to meet you in the middle. And sometimes, you'll find out they don't. And that's the hardest part: realizing that sometimes there's no bridge to build because the other person isn't ready for it. That’s when you decide if it’s worth even trying, or if it’s time to let the distance be what it is.

So, here’s my invitation: join me in showing up imperfectly. Let’s create spaces where we can lay out our pieces, the jagged edges, the different colors, the patterns that don’t quite match. To see if there’s still something worth piecing together, even if it's just a new kind of relationship where respect exists without full agreement. Because being a part of something, even if it’s not fully formed, matters more than waiting to be “ready.”

What are your thoughts on building community in a fractured world and finding ways to connect as "friendly adversaries?"

We don’t need to have all the answers. We just need to be willing to keep showing up, keep listening, and keep trying, even when it’s messy. That’s how communities are built, real people stitched together one thread at a time.

Thanks for reading.
Gary

Final Note:
If you found this piece valuable and want to support the messy work of building real community, consider sharing it with a friend or leaving a comment. Your support helps me keep showing up and making space for these conversations.
<p class="button-wrapper" While his peers built neat, predictable lives and followed the well-trodden rules of society, Elias found himself drawn to the edges, poking at the boundaries of the known and the accepted. He tested limits, tinkered with ideas, and wondered incessantly about what was real and what was mere illusion.

For decades, Elias wandered through life like a nomad of the mind. He would stumble upon something that ignited a fire within him, something he had never done before, and he would dive in with all his being. He became a chef, a musician, a writer, an explorer

Subscribe now

, each time immersing himself completely. And each time, just as he began to master his craft, the spark would dull, the thrill would fade. He would quit, convinced that he lacked the true essence of a master, that he was destined to be a dabbler forever.

Forty years passed in this manner, Elias moving from one passion to another, always curious, never quite sure if he had earned the right to stay. He watched the world from the sidelines, observing the intricate dance of human interactions. It was like a medieval battlefield, a scene straight out of "Game of Thrones," with tribes at war, alliances shifting, and power games playing out in every office, every family gathering. He saw the same patterns repeat, decade after decade, dressed in different costumes but fundamentally unchanged. It all felt so familiar, so predictable. And he wanted no part of it.

The only place Elias found true solace and belonging was with his dogs. His pack. There were no words, no judgments, just silent understanding and unwavering loyalty. It was a bond he had never found with people, and perhaps that was okay. In the quiet companionship of his dogs, he found a peace that eluded him in the chaos of human relationships.

One day, as he sat on the porch watching the sunset, a revelation struck him like lightning. Forty years in, and he finally saw it for what it was. His curiosity wasn't a curse or a flaw, it was his compass, his calling. All that quitting, all those abandoned pursuits, were not failures but steps on a journey. For Elias, the adventure wasn't in staying but in seeking. Each new passion was a chapter, each abandoned path a lesson.

As Marcus Aurelius once said,

"The happiness of your life depends upon the quality of your thoughts."

Elias realized that his thoughts, his curiosity, were the essence of his happiness. They were what had guided him all along.

With this realization, Elias felt a weight lift from his shoulders. He was done with apologies, done trying to fit into molds that weren't meant for him. He was done playing someone else's game. He wasn't here to fix the world's tribal feuds or to be the hero of anyone else's story. He was here to follow his questions, to live on his own terms, one quiet experiment at a time.

Epictetus's words echoed in his mind:

"It's not what happens to you, but how you react to it that matters."

Elias understood now that his reactions, his choices to move on and seek new horizons, were what defined him. They were his strength.

And so, Elias embraced his curiosity, that wild, relentless fire that had always burned within him. He let it guide him, keep him alive, and fill his days with wonder. Forty years it had taken him to figure it out, and he wouldn't trade that journey for anything. For in the end, it was his curiosity that had given his life meaning, and it was his curiosity that would light his way forward.

May we all find our compass in the questions we dare to ask, and may our journeys be as rich and winding as the paths we choose to explore.

With curiosity and wonder,

-Gary (Elias)

</line>

Most people think memory is just about remembering birthdays, names, or where they put their keys. But memory is so much more than a simple storage bin. It’s one of your six higher faculties, powerful mental tools that go beyond our five senses, and it's subtly, yet profoundly, shaping your life every single day, whether you realize it or not.

Memory doesn’t just store facts. It’s the dynamic software running in the background of your mind, deciding how you see yourself and how you show up in the world. It’s not merely about what happened; it's about what those memories mean to you, how they color every decision you make, and how they define your sense of possibility.

For years, I completely missed this. I unknowingly used my memory as a weapon against myself. I would endlessly replay the old tapes of my mistakes, my failures, and my doubts. Every time I thought about doing something new or taking a risk, those memories would speak up first:

You’re not that kind of person. You’re the guy who messed up, remember? You’re the one who didn’t have what it takes.

And I believed them. I let those ingrained memories decide what was possible for me, effectively keeping myself small.

But here’s the crucial thing about memory: it’s not set in stone. It’s fluid, dynamic, and alive. You don’t have to let it be the weight that holds you back. Instead, you can choose to let it be the fuel that pushes you forward.

When you bring memory into conscious awareness, everything begins to change. Suddenly, you start to see the patterns. You see how those old memories, whether good or bad, are still running the show, influencing your perceptions, your decisions, and your core beliefs. And in that moment of recognition, you realize you have a choice: keep letting those old stories define you, or consciously start rewriting them. This isn't about erasing the past or fabricating a new one; it's about reinterpreting the event, focusing on the lessons learned, the resilience gained, or shifting the perspective you've attached to it.

This isn't about erasing the past. It's about seeing it for what it truly is: a story you've been telling yourself. And stories, by their very nature, can change. They can evolve. They can grow with you.

Here’s the challenge I’m giving myself, and I’m inviting you to join me:

Find a memory that keeps coming up for you, something that’s been holding you back, or something that still weighs on you. Look at it, truly look at it, with fresh eyes. Ask yourself:

What’s the story I’ve been telling about this memory? How is it shaping my life today? And is that story actually helping me, or is it keeping me small?

Awareness is the vital first step in this continuous process of looking inward. Once you see it, you gain the power to decide: do I keep this limiting story, or do I write a new, empowering one?

Memory can be your anchor, holding you back. Or, it can be your engine, driving you forward. The choice is yours, but you have to wake up to it first. Are you ready to redefine what's possible?

Stay aware, stay curious,
Gary

Subscribe now

You Don’t Have to Be Polished to Be Powerful

I don’t sound like them. don’t sound like Oprah.
I don’t show up polished like the people who fill stages and bank accounts.

And for a long time, that made me feel like I wasn’t cut out for success.

Like maybe I had missed the part where they hand out confidence.
Like maybe I was just one of the “good ones”, the honest, quiet ones, who never quite made it.

But that’s not the worst part.

The worst part is what happens inside.

That constant inner dialogue that says:

“You don’t really know what you’re doing.”
“You’re not as capable as you think you are.”
“If you try, you’ll probably screw it up again.”
“You’re not like them.”

And honestly? I started to believe it.

That voice convinced me I was an imposter.

Not just someone who felt uncertain, but someone who might actually be a fraud.

And here’s the brutal irony:

The more I tried to be someone I wasn’t, more polished, more confident, more “together”, the louder that voice got.

But lately, I’ve been learning something different. Something I wish I had learned a long time ago:

That voice in your head? It’s not truth.
It’s a glitch. A tape. A leftover echo.
You don’t have to obey it.

Subscribe now

You don’t have to be polished to be powerful.
You don’t have to be loud to be heard.
You don’t have to be perfect to begin.

I’ve helped one person, my wife, change her life.

Not by being a guru.
Not by having a flawless plan.
But by speaking to her the way I wish someone had spoken to me.

Gently. Honestly.
With presence, not performance.

She says I’m her saving grace.
But the truth is, I didn’t save her.
She saved herself. I just gave her space to remember she could.

And if I can do that for her,
maybe I can do it for one more person.
Maybe that person is you.

So if you’ve ever felt like a butter knife in a world full of swords,
like you don’t cut deep enough, speak loud enough, shine bright enough,
I want to say this clearly:

You’re not broken. You’re just becoming.

You don’t need to fix yourself before you begin.
You don’t need to silence the inner voice, you just need to stop obeying it.

Speak anyway.
Create anyway.
Click anyway.

That’s what I’m doing now.

No polish. No mask.
Just presence.

Trying to be a little better today than I was yesterday.
And maybe that’s enough.

But here’s the part I don’t usually say:

I’ve spent years feeling like I missed my shot.
Like I cried “wolf” too many times with all the things I tried and never finished.
Like the people who know me have already tuned out.
Like I’ve wasted too much time to ever catch up.

And yet... I’m still here.

Still waking up with fire in my chest.
Still dreaming. Still building.
Still trying to make something that matters, not just to me, but to someone out there who needs to hear what I’ve never had the guts to say until now:

It’s OK to be what you are right now.
Not later. Not “once you get it together.”
Now.

You’re not too late.
You’re not too far gone.
You’re not the only one carrying that voice that says otherwise.

And if you’ve been waiting for someone to give you permission to move anyway,
this is it.

Let’s walk forward together, imperfect, unsure, and still in the fight.

One click at a time.

Still figuring it out, still showing up,
—Gary
<p class="button-wrapper" I’m building, they didn’t come from sitting around thinking hard.
They showed up.
Quietly.
Like someone knocked at the back door of my mind. Or I wake up feeling like I just finished a conversation with someone, and I was just there to listen.

That’s how it’s always worked for me.

When I started my trucking business, it wasn’t because I mapped out the perfect plan. It just felt like the next right thing. Same with the candy business, I was in the kitchen making my grandma’s peanut butter fudge when a thought came in clear as day: people would buy this.
So I sold it.
They did.

Even the online businesses I’ve started, some that clicked, some that didn’t, they all began the same way. With a gut feeling. A spark. A hunch I couldn’t fully explain.

That’s intuition.

Not magic. Not guesswork.
Just a built-in compass that speaks before your brain catches up.

But most people never learn to use it, not because they don’t have it, but because no one ever told them it was there. Or that it mattered.

You’ve Felt It Before. You Just Didn’t Call It That.

Think about these moments:

The Wrong Turn Feeling: You’re heading somewhere familiar but suddenly feel the urge to take a different route. Later, you hear about the wreck you avoided.

The Instant Connection (or Discomfort): You meet someone new and just know you can trust them, or that something’s off.

The Shower Epiphany: You’ve been stuck on a problem. Then out of nowhere, walking the dog, taking a shower, a solution hits you like lightning.

The “Don’t Say That” Urge: You’re mid-conversation, and something tells you to hold back. Later, you realize it saved you a conflict.

The Investment Hunch: Two options look the same on paper, but one feels right. Months later, you’re glad you listened.

The Diagnostic Insight: A doctor gets a gut feeling about a condition before tests confirm it.

These aren’t random.
They’re not accidents.
They’re signals.

And if you’ve ever said, “I knew I shouldn’t have…”, then you already know what it feels like to ignore them.

The Pink Elephant Test

Let’s try something.

Don’t think of a pink elephant.

Too late, right?
You already saw it, in your mind, clear as day.

That’s the point.

Thoughts aren’t just noise in your head. They create images, emotions, reactions.
They don’t sit still, they move you.

And if a thought as ridiculous as a pink elephant can show up that fast, imagine how many thoughts, quiet, automatic, emotional, are guiding your day without you even noticing.

That’s where intuition lives.
It starts with awareness.
You don’t have to chase it, you just have to stop ignoring it.

You’re Not Broken. You’re Just Out of Practice.

Most people are trying to fix what’s on the outside: their health, their habits, their relationships, their work.
But the problem isn’t out there.
It’s that they’ve forgotten how to trust themselves.

We’ve been taught to worship logic.
To respect data, check boxes, play it safe.

But logic is slow.
Intuition is fast.

Logic says, “Give me proof.”
Intuition says, “This just feels true.”

The truth is, you’re not stuck because you’re lazy.
You’re stuck because you’ve stopped listening.

So… What Is Intuition, Really?

I did a little research!

Here’s how different fields explain it:

1. Pattern Recognition (Psychology)

Your brain is always learning, reading subtle cues, collecting patterns, filing them away. Intuition might be your subconscious matching those patterns before your conscious mind catches on.

Think: a nurse who senses something’s wrong before the vitals show it. Or a chess master who just feels danger coming.

Read: Thinking, Fast and Slow – Daniel Kahneman
Bonus: Gut Feelings – Gerd Gigerenzer

2. The Gut-Brain Connection (Neuroscience)

That “gut feeling” isn’t just a phrase. Your gut has its own nervous system that talks to your brain. Emotions, anxiety, excitement, they show up there first.

You feel something’s off in your body before your mind finds the words.

Read: Descartes’ Error – Antonio Damasio
Study: Cryan & Dinan (2012) – Nature Reviews Neuroscience

3. Implicit Learning (Cognitive Science)

We absorb more than we realize. Intuition might tap into that hidden library of experience and memory, even when we can’t consciously explain it.

Like knowing someone’s lying, even if they haven’t said a word wrong.

Read: Implicit Learning and Tacit Knowledge – Arthur S. Reber

4. Integrated Information Theory (Philosophy/Neuroscience)

Some believe intuition is what happens when different parts of the brain integrate complex info into a single, clear knowing.

Your brain isn’t adding up facts, it’s connecting them all at once.

Read: Tononi et al. – Integrated Information Theory

5. Eastern Wisdom (Mindfulness)

Intuition thrives in stillness. When you get quiet enough, you stop hearing your fear and start hearing the truth underneath it.

You don’t have to go find answers. You just have to stop drowning them out.

Read: Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind – Shunryu Suzuki
Practice: Full Catastrophe Living – Jon Kabat-Zinn

Try This Today

No candles. No chanting.
Just five quiet minutes.

Sit still.
Turn off the noise.
Ask yourself:

“What do I already know… that I’ve been pretending not to?”

Let whatever comes… come.

Write it down.
Don’t explain it. Don’t judge it.
Do it again tomorrow.

This is how you start hearing your own voice again.

Final Thought

You don’t need to reinvent yourself to change your life.
You just need to remember how to listen.

That voice? That whisper? That gut feeling that doesn’t need to argue its case?
That’s you, the version of you that already knows.

You’ve always had access to it.
You just forgot to listen.

Quietly,
Gary
<p class="button-wrapper" The weight of routine. The weight of memory, what worked, what didn’t, what still hurts. Before I even lift my head, the world starts piling on.

But this morning, something strange happened.

I woke up with a word in my mind.

Imagination.

Not worry. Like I had cracked open a door to something I’d forgotten how to reach.

So I followed it.

I sat in silence for a while, coffee in hand, dogs at my feet, and I asked myself the simplest question I’ve asked in years:

What do I know about imagination?

Imagination is not a toy. It’s a tool.
A scalpel. A compass. A flame.

We treat it like it belongs to children or artists or people who don’t have “real jobs.” But imagination built the first fire. It crossed oceans. It whispered, “What if we didn’t live this way anymore?” and gave birth to every turning point in history.

It’s not cute. It’s dangerous.

Because imagination is the place where nothing exists, yet.

It asks you to trust what you can’t prove.
To plant seeds you’ll never fully control.
To believe in futures you’ve never touched.

That’s why most people avoid it.
They’d rather stay tethered to what’s familiar, even if it’s painful, than risk reaching for what might be better.

But if you don’t engage your imagination, you don’t just miss out on ideas.
You miss out on yourself.

Let’s stir the pot a bit.

When you don’t use your imagination, here’s what you lose:

The picture of yourself not giving up this time.

The strength to walk past shame like it has no authority.

The joy of seeing your body in motion, not judgment.

The thrill of writing the words you were afraid to say.

The quiet satisfaction of becoming someone you once thought was out of reach.

We imagine all day long, but mostly in reverse.

We picture rejection, so we don’t reach out.
We picture failure, so we don’t begin.
We rehearse disappointment like it’s a song we know by heart.

But when was the last time
you imagined something good?

Something GREAT?

If I could hear the thoughts you think about yourself, what would they say?

Would they speak with love? kindness? With hope?
Or would they echo the voices that taught you to doubt, diminish, delay and never begin?

Like:

Feeling proud as you walk past a mirror.

Laughing in the kitchen with someone who sees you and smells something good.

Creating something with your bare hands that didn’t exist before.

Whispering to yourself, “I didn’t quit.”

We think imagination is pretend. But it’s not.
It’s the blueprint of your becoming.
It’s the womb where possibility grows.
It’s the quiet artist sketching your next chapter in pencil,
waiting for you to pick up the pen.

I used to live in that place.

Long before bills and cholesterol and “I should really lose some weight.”
Before shame sat in my back pocket and fear whispered in my ear.

Back then, I was busy building forts in the woods.
Turning sticks into swords.
Clouds into animals.
Whole kingdoms rose and fell in my backyard, and not once did I ask if I was doing it right.

I didn’t plan joy. I just followed it.

No five-year vision. No self-help podcast.
Just a busted-up bicycle, a half-eaten sandwich, and the unshakable belief
that the world could become anything I wanted,
if I imagined it hard enough.

That’s still in me.

It’s still in you, too.

It not dead, although it probably got buried. Under routines. Regrets. Grown-up expectations.
But it’s there. Waiting like an old friend.
And the second you reach for it,
really reach,
you’ll feel it rush in like a memory you forgot you lived.

As a kid, I used to watch the Justice League like it was a glimpse into what I might become. Not because I wanted to wear a cape, but because deep down, I believed I could be more than I was. Imagination did that. And maybe it still can.

Because imagination doesn’t ask for credentials.
It just asks for permission.

So here it is.
Give it space.

Subscribe now

Author’s Note:

This post isn’t about productivity. Or strategy. Or fixing your life.

It’s about remembering the part of you that still knows how to dream, play, and create.

If it stirred something, share it.
If it made you remember, write it down.
And if it lit even a tiny flame,
protect it. Feed it. Let it grow.

You’re not done becoming.
Not even close.

The Chair with the Foot Pump

A Mother’s With Mother’s Day coming up, this felt like the right time to share...

And with Mother’s Day just around the corner, it feels right to sit with her memory a while.

She was strong, opinionated, and absolutely certain of who she was. Everyone knew where she stood. You didn’t have to guess. She said what she thought, and she meant it.

When I was a kid, she ran her own beauty shop. I can still see it clear as day. The chair with the foot pump that lifted each customer to the perfect height. The scissors and combs. That weird little tool I only just learned the name of today: a teasing comb. I could picture it in my head, but I had to Google it this morning to find out what it was actually called.

The smocks she’d fasten around each customer’s neck, those made great Superman capes when I needed one. I remember the ladies sitting under those giant hair dryers with the pull-down helmets, the ones with all the little holes that blasted hot air. I even tried it a few times just to see what all the fuss was about.

And the smell, especially the perm solution. Lord have mercy. I didn’t hang around long when that came out. But I still remember the bags of curlers, all different colors, scattered across the counters and shelves. Each probably meant something to her, but I never thought to ask. The bottles of shampoos and conditioners. The “color cap,” which I now know was for highlighting hair. She’d pull little strands through the holes using something that looked like a crochet hook. To a 6-year-old, that was wizardry.

Maybe the real reason I loved being in her shop, though, was all the attention. Those ladies doted on me. Told me how cute I was. Complimented my thick head of hair, most of which didn’t stick around, but hey, what’s left is easy to manage now.

It’s funny the things that stick.
Of all the years and all the moments I shared with my mom, these are the ones that bubbled to the surface today.

Not her advice. Not the holidays. Not even the hugs, though there were plenty.
Just the shop. The smells. The sights. The way she moved through that space like she owned the world.
Because she kind of did.

Maybe that’s what she wanted me to remember today. Maybe this is how she’s saying hello.

So for Mother’s Day, I’m not going to write a tribute full of big wisdom or grand emotion.
I’m just going to remember her like this: in her element, doing what she loved, being exactly who she was.

That’s enough.

Happy Mother’s Day to every woman who shaped us, showed up, or made us feel safe in the chair, even if just for a moment.
And to my mom: I love you. Always.

Subscribe now

What about you?
If your mom (or someone like a mom) left behind a memory that still makes you smile, I’d love to hear it.
Drop it in the comments. Or just take a quiet moment today to let it rise to the surface.
Sometimes remembering is the most honest way we can say thank you.
